SmartBond™ DA14580 and DA14583

The DA14585 and DA14586 are recommended for new designs.

da14580-3.svg

The most flexible and lowest power Bluetooth® low energy solutions

The DA14580&3 integrated circuits have a fully integrated radio transceiver and baseband processor for Bluetooth low energy. They can be used as a standalone application processor or as a data pump in hosted systems.

SmartBond™ DA14583 combines the benefits of the lowest power, smallest size and lowest system cost Bluetooth low energy System-on-Chip with an integrated flash. Furthermore the DA14583 is pin to pin compatible with the DA14580 thereby offering a unique cost down path from flash to OTP.

The DA14580&3 support a flexible memory architecture for storing Bluetooth profiles and custom application code, which can be updated over the air (OTA). The qualified Bluetooth low energy protocol stack is stored in a dedicated ROM. All software runs on the ARM® Cortex®-M0 processor via a simple scheduler.

The Bluetooth low energy firmware includes the L2CAP service layer protocols, Security Manager (SM), Attribute Protocol (ATT), the Generic Attribute Profile (GATT) and the Generic Access Profile (GAP). All profiles published by the Bluetooth SIG as well as custom profiles are supported. The transceiver interfaces directly to the antenna and is fully compliant with the Bluetooth 4.2 standard.

The DA14580&3 have dedicated hardware for the Link Layer implementation of Bluetooth low energy and interface controllers for enhanced connectivity capabilities.

Chip antenna for DA14580

Posted by Dang 80 points 3 replies

Dear support team,

In this post, LC_Dialog said that chip antenna was not recommended for DA14580.
https://support.dialog-semiconductor.com/forums/post/dialog-smartbond-b…

Can you please tell me more about the performance degradation when chip antenna is used with DA14580?
Is communication range/speed reduced?
Is broadcasting signal strength reduced?
How bad is it?

Printed PCB antenna is not possible for my project. Is there any way else to fix this issue?
If there is no way, what would be the best alternative to DA14580 (in term of functionality and cost), which could be used with a chip antenna?

Thanks for your help,
Dang

Hi Dang,

Thanks for your question. As mentioned in the previous forum thread, you can use a chip antenna that is designed for a 50 Ohm matching and for 2.4GHz frequency spectrum since you it is not possible to use a printed antenna in your project. The degradation is depended on the chip antenna that will be used.

If you are starting a new design or project, we would strongly recommend moving into DA14531 or DA14585/586 products and SDK6.0.14, as it is much more improved. We have a lot of code examples and improved documentation, and there is also software roadmap support. There is not any software roadmap support for DA14580 product family and SDK5.

https://www.dialog-semiconductor.com/products/connectivity/bluetooth-low-energy/products/da14531

We also have a DA14531 module, namely DA14531 SmartBond TINY™ Module! It has very small dimensions and is very low power. Follow the link below to find datasheet, documentation and HW collaterals for the module:

https://www.dialog-semiconductor.com/products/bluetooth-module-da14531-smartbond-tiny

Thanks, PM_Dialog

Dear PM_Dialog,

Can you please confirm that DA14531 does not have any problem with chip antenna?

I assume performance is the same either printed antenna or chip antenna is used with DA14531?

Thanks for your support,

Dang

PM_Dialog

Hi Dang,

Thanks for accepting my answer. Yes, a chip antenna can be used. In general, every ceramic chip antenna for the 2.4GHz band could be used. However, the antenna selection is closely depended on the board. Different ceramic antennas might have special placement needs : some needs to be mounted on the edge, some needs ground free bottom layer, etc. There is a great variety of 2.4GHz chip antennas available on the market. Please follow the layout guideline in the datasheet and see also the AN-B-075: DA14531 Hardware Guidelines document.

Thanks, PM_Dialog
