Introducing Bluetooth mesh for Dialog SmartBond™ devices

At Dialog, we’re very excited about the new connectivity opportunities that Bluetooth mesh – the newest protocol in many-to-many device connectivity – is poised to offer. That’s why we’ve now added support for Bluetooth mesh to our SmartBond product family, integrating mesh compatibility into how up to thousands of devices communicate with each other.

Starting with the DA14682 and DA14683, our popular line of SmartBond Bluetooth low energy System-on-Chip (SoC) devices will now be further enhanced with Bluetooth mesh networking, empowering these devices with new extended-range applications in both home and industrial environments. Mesh support will also be shortly deployed into the DA14586, DA14585 and its high-temperature derivatives, and we’ll announce the timing for those soon. Further, because all of our SmartBond products are qualified as Bluetooth 5-compliant devices, they will provide users with a best-in-class implementation of Bluetooth mesh support.

Dialog is now providing SmartBond device development kits with qualified, tested Bluetooth mesh evaluation systems, to help developers implement mesh into their devices with the intent of bringing products to market faster. In addition, we’re also providing customers with iOS and Android applications that they can use for interfacing with their Bluetooth mesh devices via smartphone or tablet.

This development kit release enables Bluetooth mesh and any product carrying a SmartBond SoC to tap into a new network of interconnected Bluetooth devices, while expanding connectivity across greater distances and overcoming performance hurdles that Bluetooth protocols have long struggled with. Bluetooth mesh uses Bluetooth devices as nodes in a more expansive network and provides an easier way of interacting with a network through smartphones, tablets and digital voice assistant devices.

Additionally, mesh facilitates communications between devices produced by different manufacturers. That kind of cross-compatibility and reach throws open the door of new possibilities for Bluetooth low energy devices.

And, with Bluetooth mesh support, Dialog SmartBond devices can now be leveraged for an array of new consumer and commercial applications, including:

  • Asset tracking
  • Beacons
  • Energy management
  • Industrial automation
  • Smart cities
  • Smart homes
  • Smart lighting

Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing more stories exploring the impact of Bluetooth mesh on a range of industrial applications and environments. In the meantime, be sure to check out the full lineup of Dialog SmartBond and Bluetooth low energy devices.
