The desktop phone is probably the most common VoIP application for the business sector. Our Enterprise VoIP development platform lets you quickly and easily develop a complete range of VoIP desktop phones to address all price points. You just have to pick the features you want from the extensive selection of hardware and software options available.

Low-end phones

Low-end VoIP desktop phones typically have a basic keypad and just a small text LCD or none at all, and often only support narrowband audio codecs. Depending on their target use, they may offer one or two Ethernet ports and usually have limited wireless connectivity. These phones are often used as "walk-up" phones in corridors and lobbies.

Mid-range phones

These phones typically feature a black-and-white or colour graphic display and support both narrowband and wideband audio codecs. They also have more complete keypads than low-end phones, with dedicated function, navigation and speed-dial keys as well as soft keys. Some of the keys may be backlit with an LED and a keyboard extension is a common add-on. Connectivity options usually include two Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet ports, while DECT, Bluetooth and USB may also be offered.

High-end phones

Top-of the-range phones typically offer large, colour graphics-capable LCD displays, possibly including touch-screen technology. The keypad is even more complete than for mid-range phones, with more dedicated function keys. Two Gigabit Ethernet ports are standard. On the wireless front, DECT and Bluetooth are common, and the ability to connect to IP networks through Wi-Fi may also be included. In some models, an external camera can be connected for limited video conferencing capabilities.

Typical Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) application

An analog telephone adapter, or analog terminal adapter (ATA), makes it easy for homes and business to join the VoIP revolution. Handling all the necessary signal and protocol conversion the ATA is a plug-and-play solution that allows conventional PSTN (analog) phones and fax machines to communicate with remote (digital) VoIP servers.

Dialog Semiconductor's Enterprise VoIP development platform offers manufacturers a quick and easy route to attractive ATA solutions. Delivering design flexibility, the platform allows for up to four FXS ports, up to 2 FXS / FXO ports or any combination of the two (e.g. one FXO and two FXS ports).

Through the kit's integrated DECT baseband, manufacturers can extend the functionality and appeal of ATAs with another common communications interface: cordless telephony. Moreover, DECT and its update CAT-iq allow DECT handsets to connect directly to the ATA and open the door to new internet-based services. For example, telecom companies could offer over-the-air upgrades for deployed handsets or services such as weather information and online telephone directories.

Typical IP-DECT base station application

VoIP promises lower telephony costs. DECT delivers the freedom of cordless communication with outstanding voice quality and extremely reliable transmission. IP-DECT combines these into one easy-to-use package. And through an IP-DECT base station you can help residential and business users re-use their existing DECT cordless phones to join the VoIP revolution.

In homes and small businesses, an IP-DECT basestation allows a DECT handset to connect directly to the internet via an x DSL or cable modem. For larger businesses a single basestation can act as a single-cell base for cordless handsets and conference phones with the standard DECT range. Alternatively, several basestations can be spread across a site allowing users to roam freely from room to room. They can also be used to connect DECT ULE sensors to the internet for remote security, metering and building automation applications.

Dialog Semiconductor Green VoIP processors have the processing power to run networking and SIP stacks. Choose one with an embedded DECT baseband, add in one of our radio ICs and you have the ideal solution for single- and multi-cell IP-DECT basestations with a low bill of materials (BoM). A single-cell system could support up to six handsets with four active secure IP calls, while multi-cell systems could support 12 handsets and 8-12 active calls. The embedded analog codec and PCM interface allow you to offer additional FXS or FXO interfaces on your basestation.
