Typical cordless game controllers application

We offer cordless game controller solutions for many exciting products on the market today, backed up by development support including application notes, demonstration boards and reference designs.

For example, we developed chips for the Xbox 360 console and game pads, allowing users to enjoy a wireless gaming experience comparable to the speed and reliability of a wired game pad, while eliminating the clutter of cables.

The Xbox 360 wireless interface solution consists of a base module integrated into the Xbox 360 console. It connects up to four wireless game pads (including voice and data for each connection). Linking up via Ethernet / WLAN allows wireless multi-player gaming.

Important in this application is interference prevention and quality audio in combination with real-time data. Our baseband chips include all digital and analog interfaces, including USB. The integrated battery management supports both standard and rechargeable batteries. The chips are all offered in standard CMOS technology.

Typical integrated access devices application

Integrated Access Devices (IADs) offer homes and small to mid-sized enterprises a level of service previously only available to corporate users. These innovative products combine high-quality voice and high-speed data services, providing benefits for end customers and communications providers alike.
Examples of CAT-iq handsets

For customers IADs enable an integrated yet flexible voice and data network for the home or office that makes use of existing infrastructure and are fully compatible with existing voice and data equipment. Moreover, the network can be easily expanded simply by plugging in additional equipment such as telephones, faxes or PCs.

IADs also allow service providers to expand their offering without having to develop new infrastructure, for faster and lower-cost roll outs. Through full-featured integrated services providers can offer value-added communications to millions of smaller businesses and residential customers. These bundled services are a great way to strengthen the relationship between supplier and customer.

Breaking the barriers between data and voice

Dialog Semiconductor's DECT expertise allows you to create IADs with exceptional voice quality. Going further, we offer a range of ICs, software and reference design solutions for the emerging CAT-iq standard.

CAT-iq was designed to bring telephony and broadband internet together. It provides extra bandwidth for audio, enabling high definition sound quality that is as natural as possible. At the same time it allows a wealth of innovative new features like streaming wireless music and audio or easy access to yellow pages and other public phone books worldwide. Moreover, the CAT-iq protocol ensures interoperability between devices for ‘plug-and-play' network expansion.

Typical Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) application

Wireless networking covers a multitude of applications from industrial control to remote healthcare monitoring and smart homes. The applications may be very different, but the networking requirements are very similar: reliable, long-range communication between autonomous nodes with long battery lifetimes.

Developed specifically for wireless networking by former SiTel and RTX Telecom, DECT ULE is an ultra-low-energy version of the DECT standard. It delivers all the benefits of DECT, including interference-free communication, long range, excellent voice quality, plug-and-play installation and data rates that support voice, data and video. Plus, it allows typical sensor applications to run for years on a single AAA battery.

You can incorporate DECT ULE into your application quickly and easily through our cordless voice and wireless sensor modules. Wireless sensor modules are ideal for sensor nodes, while cordless voice modules fit network controller requirements perfectly. Fully type approved, the modules integrate all the hardware and software you need, including the antenna. So you can just drop them into your application - no RF expertise or resources required.

Typical home automation, control and security application

Home automation, control and security is an emerging and fast-growing application area within home networking. It covers a wide range of applications that aim to make our daily lives more comfortable, safer and more energy efficient. Typical applications include:
  • Heating / air-conditioning control
  • Burglar, fire and security alarms
  • Door phones
  • Healthcare monitoring for the elderly
  • Smart and remote metering

Applications like these allow consumers to monitor and control the environment in any room from anywhere in their home – or even beyond, via the internet or their (mobile) phone. And that opens up big opportunities for service providers and hardware manufacturers alike.

An obvious solution

As a relatively new application area, home automation, control and security has yet to fix on one standard networking protocol. However DECT, and particularly its new ultra-low power operating mode DECT ULE, is attracting increasing attention as that potential standard because it offers excellent all-round performance in the key technical requirements such as range, power consumption, reliability, bandwidth and cost.

The DECT difference

    • Cellar-to-ceiling coverage without repeaters
  • Voice capabilities built in
  • Long battery lifetime
    • Sensor operates for up to 10 years on a single AAA battery with DECT ULE
  • Familiar, easy-to-use technology
    • Installed in 250 million homes worldwide
  • No interference issues
    • Operates in the licensed but royalty-free 1.9 GHz band
  • Internet enabled with secure encryption
  • Mature technology reduces manufacturing costs

Typical headsets and audio application

Cordless headsets are used in many offices and call centre environments, where people can effectively be on the phone all day. Rather than having to hold a handset for more than six hours per day it is more convenient to wear a headset. Using Dialog Semiconductor's DECT technology provides the optimum solution for cordless implementations with high quality sound, long range and no interference.

Specifically in call centre environments, often a large number of people are using headsets in a relatively small area. To improve the density, advanced power control can be utilised for dynamical adjustment of the transmission power to the most optimal level, while maintaining an in-house range of up to 100 meters. The power management options of our chipsets also have proven talk times of more than fifteen hours.

And if we are talking about wireless audio: this brings users a new level of freedom - whether they're listening to music, making business calls or just need to hear clearly. But to do that wireless audio solutions need to deliver crystal-clear sound and long battery lifetimes from small, attractive products.

Designed for cordless telephony, DECT wireless networking technology comes with outstanding sound and voice quality built in. Build on this we have extended the voice quality to HiFi audio solutions which benefit from the robust DECT air interface. As a leading supplier of DECT solutions, we help you bring that sound quality to any wireless audio application from cordless headsets to public address systems. We offer a range of IC and single-chip solutions that deliver the DSP performance you need for audio enhancements like noise cancellation. Yet their power consumption is low enough for your system to run on compact lithium-ion batteries. You can choose from a selection of space-saving packages such as Ball-Grid Arrays (BGAs).
