Automotive Controllers for every application
Enhancing safety, comfort and engine management
Europe’s top five car makers use our custom, mixed-signal, system-on-chip devices for smart motor control, where they reduce size and cost, and boost performance and reliability.
Produced on a purpose designed automotive CMOS process, our unique ICs combine high performance analog circuits, flash memory, microcontrollers, high density digital logic and high voltage circuits on a single chip.
Such a high level of component integration reduces component count and interconnection requirements, thereby substantially improving automotive system reliability. It also simplifies component qualification – there are simply far fewer parts requiring approval.

The benefit of integration with the advantage of standard CMOS
To support direct car battery connection and to withstand 40V transient, load dump conditions, most of our automotive ICs are built on a CMOS process technology developed specifically for automotive applications: FTSMC35HV.
Jointly developed by Dialog, Bosch and TSMC, FTSMC35HV is based on a commercial grade 0.35µ technology, to which is added a high voltage extension which offers 40V n-channel and 20V and 40V p-channel extended drain MOS transistors.
To meet the need for both 40V handling and non-volatile memory, process modifications in the embedded flash IP also extends its operational temperature range and dramatically improves endurance. Embedded Flash uses split gate cell design and a thick gate oxide and integrates forward error correction.
Process available for at least 10 years, our FTSMC35HV process is qualified for use over the temperature range –40ºC to +150ºC (AEC Q100 Grade 0) and has passed the Bosch automotive qualification (<0.5ppm program).
Matching IC resources with application need
To closely match specific automotive application requirements, our custom designed automotive motor controller ICs offer a wide choice of microcontroller cores: 8051 (8bit), CR16 (16bit) and the ARM7 (32bit).
In terms of memory resources flexibility is an important factor too and our custom motor controller IC range provides the option of Flash, both with and without FEC, and Data RAM and Flash sizes to fit the task.
To ensure the most efficient management of power, a range of power supplies are generated internally and are backed by comprehensive sequencing and monitoring resources.
The on-chip motor controller includes a driver for external power FETs and a charge pump. Also integrated is a clock system offering a series of programmable PLLs.
In terms of I/O facilities, general purpose I/Os are high voltage (40V) rated and an integral sensor interface includes both ADC and preconditioning stages. Several automotive system bus interfaces are provided as standard of course and to speed diagnostics all our ICs have an integrated debug interface:
Dialog’s motor control ICs are custom designed for a wide range of automotive applications, including window and mirror control, automatic seat belt tensioning, accurate windscreen wiper control, and control of engine cooling fans.
LED drivers for advanced lighting systems are under development. Highly integrated power management solutions for car infotainment will be launched as standard components soon.
In the near future, our custom automotive SoCs will be complemented by standard ICs for many of the functions described here.
